October passed quickly but there were several developments that Amber noticed.
First, she had to smile at the activity at Gingieâs house. Officer Loganâs car was a frequent overnight guest of her driveway. It made her happy to think of the progression of that relationship. She hoped she was still there when they had their wedding. She really didnât want to miss it. They made a damn cute couple. And from Gingieâs satisfied smile whenever she ran into her in the neighborhood, they were quite sexually compatible.
That was a gift sheâd once had. Well, for the best week of her life. She just wished sheâd savored it even more when it was happening. Saint Barts would always be a magical place to her.
Second, Libby seemed to blossom in her grief. The woman who had looked so downtrodden but a little over a month ago, was now glowing. Sheâd cut her hair, had it dyed to get out the gray, bought new clothes, bought a new car, and looked ten years younger. Puppy Larry, a handsome black Labrador, took her for a walk each morning, and she laughed openly at his antics. Amber wondered how long it had been since she had laughed when Dick was alive.
Amber had thrown away the marmalade jars in her pantry, one jar at a time in the weekly garbage. When it was all gone it felt like that dark chapter seemed to be over.
Third, the leaves were beginning to change color, the sky was getting darker earlier in the evening. They were stepping into fall. Halloween was tomorrow, and she planned to leave for her trip to Nevada on November first. She was just in time to beat the snow on the mountain passes, although seeing a little snow would be fun, as long as it didnât inconvenience her.
Fourth, she checked on her poison garden every other day. The plants had decided to move in permanently to their neighborhood, sending out roots, which pleased her to no end. The Queenâs Anne Lace had germinated, although it knew that winter was coming. She could assume all the bulbs were happily underground thinking the same thing, getting cozy and taking a siesta until February. She added moth balls to the boundary of her garden. The squirrels gave it a wide birth. She didnât worry about poisoning them; she worried about them digging up her expensive daffodils, realizing they were poisonous and leaving them out of their protective earth to dry out and die. The little bastards had a way of doing that, and she was forever fighting them.
Fifth, Gingie had called her about landscapers coming to her yard to clean it up. And within an hour, they had arrived and started in on their horrible task. The poison oak as well as the blackberries had been removed. None of it had any positive uses, so Amber didnât harvest any for herself. She had harvested some raspberry leaves while out walking in her new neighborhood. A skein was just hanging over the fence, trying to grab any passersby with its thorns.
